Formed in the second half of 2015, in the intersection of the summer and the autumn, used the philosophical paradox of the ship of Theseus as the hull, they began the voyage. Five guys in their early 20’s that seems positive of their life created the wall of sounds with burdensome words and chunky sorrow. Twirling between country and post-rock, crashed out the scattered yet precious shipboards from the disappointment of the world and the processes that are gradually fading away.
These unavoidable obscure depressions originated from the progress of growing collected themselves as the first EP “Liah-Kau-The”. Though there are only four tracks in this EP, the “mini” EP of a total length of almost 30 minutes leads people into the lingering disconsolation, which is not the cynicism that modern people claims to possess. The stories and songs from Theseus storms their way to us like the hollowed feeling of powerlessness that we have no way to avoid but endure it like the lamb that to be slaughtered.
The main song that shares the same title as of the EP “Liah-Kau-The” is the last song of the EP. Comparing to the whole EP, although it is a relatively upbeat song, it is only a forced laughter. After digesting the texts, putting away the depressed feeling after the whole EP can be a heavier backtracking punch instead. The meaning of “Liah-Kau-The” can be understood as being tricked into a scapegoat, which means being deprived by the cruel reality of the most important part of your life in the progress of growing. It could be your dreams or your innocence, or both. Along with growing up, the past self will no longer be the current self, as the philosophical paradox from the band’s name, instead, turning into one of the real world’s accomplice.
“We used to tell everybody before performing this song to not be tricked into a scapegoat. Gradually, we can only ask the audiences to accomplish the things you want to do before you finally become one of them.” Said the guitarist Hsiang-Yu.
Theseus, the band, is fighting with their own best before the day comes.
Self-raised for their first EP and sailing to six cities in Taiwan.
Without the resources from companies and the financial subsidy from the government, the five guys in their early 20’s rolled out the release tour of the EP “Liah-Kau-The” after half year of independent production and planning. First concert took place at APA-MINI. Tickets sold out in only two weeks, which gave the guys a shot in the arm. However, to a tour that is going to have seven performances in a row, band members are still urgently preparing for other sessions. Because leaving Taipei will be the biggest challenge. Heading south to Taichung, Tainan, Kaohsiung, Pingtung, and Yilan in eastern Taiwan, and coming back to Taipei, the starting point, as the imagery of the band’s name. To me, as an independent musician, this tour is a vast sailing.
The tour is not only a birth ceremony of a work from the recording studio but also an assembly of all the process of playing in a band and all the participation of the actions of art. Their deliberate planning was cooperated with multiple crossover artists. Including the cooperation only projection from the VJ of the new generation “Raefuse”. Invited the artist with multiple identity “Mohammad Umar Afzal” to produce the video of recitation. Hoping to present their concept of “instrumental theatre” with more completion in a more exquisite manner. Hence, lead the audience to feel the wretched feeling in the same way as the band. So that the audience can enjoy the performance.
Not only did the real world affect their creation, the stresses from different layers of the reality also did. The planning of the tour emptied the band members’ wallet, which made them have to take several part-time jobs just to support the expenses for the next month.
“We want to tell our story and the hidden, humid, and depressed side of us that hides underneath the glory of us. We hope the depressed generation from all over the world to be willing to support.”
